Ask the MAC

With Dan Crutchington, Senior Transport Advisor

Safety permitting...

Q. What is the timeline for applications for safety permits as part of London’s Direct Vision Standard, with the change to the Progressive Safe System (PSS) coming into force in October 2024?

A. Zero, one, and two-star permits granted before 24 June 2024 are valid until midnight on 27 October 2024, at which point, these permit holders will need to have applied for a new safety permit to demonstrate that their vehicle meets the new PSS requirements to operate in London. Transport for London (TfL) will accept applications for the new requirements from 24 June 2024 for vehicles that will need a permit with a PSS condition, which will be valid until midnight on 28 October 2030.

Existing permits for HGVs rated three stars or above will remain valid for the duration stated in your confirmation email. For these vehicles a new safety permit will be granted automatically on application, which also open on 24 June 2024 and will last until midnight on 28 October 2030.

Colour me right

Q. We have recently had a vehicle wrapped in our colours, which is different to the colour stated on the V5C. Do we have to update the V5C accordingly?

A. Most changes made to a vehicle, as well as any mistakes on the V5C will need to be updated accordingly, so if the vehicle has changed colour then the V5C will need updating.
