Ask the MAC

With Becky Martin, Senior Compliance Advisor, Logistics UK

Am I losing it?!

Q - If a driver misses the deadline for the 35hrs of periodic training do they lose the hours already recorded and have to start again?

A – No drivers would not necessarily lose their hours and have to start again, it would depend when their periodic training was completed. Each module of Driver CPC periodic training has its own rolling five-year period of validity to consider in line with the Driver Qualification Card (DQC) which has its own validity that is clearly marked on the card. You can check the validity of each module of periodic training on the gov.uk ‘check your Driver CPC periodic training hours’ portal, the link to which can be found here. Drivers would not be able to drive professionally in the interim period between the deadline and the time the training was completed and records uploaded.

Validate this!

Q - Can a driver with a suspended licence undertake periodic training?

A - A suspended licence will show as this on an online check. Although the vocational entitlement is suspended, the licence is still a valid form of identity and meets the ID requirements. This allows the driver to complete classroom-based training which can be uploaded and count towards the driver’s 35 hours training should their suspended licence be reinstated. Drivers undertake this training at their own risk; if their licence is ultimately revoked any training is invalid. As the driver’s vocational entitlement has been suspended, they won’t be able to complete any on-road driving training.
