Stand by your beds, inspection time...

Q - We run a small number of panel vans which are not included on our operator licence. Should they also be inspected every six weeks like our 7.5t?

A - You are obliged to maintain any vehicle operating on the public roads in a roadworthy condition. This can only be achieved by having a regular inspection and servicing regime in place together with a system for drivers to report any defects. DVSA’s Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness states that there is an expectation that operator licence holders who use vehicles which are out of scope for operator licencing should have an appropriate maintenance regime in place to ensure the roadworthiness of these vehicles. Failure to maintain out of scope vehicles may also be taken into consideration by the Traffic Commissioner.

Q -  A driver has completed their periodic training, but their new Driver Qualification Card has not arrived. Can they drive in-scope of Driver CPC?

A - Training providers are required to upload the training modules within five working days. A driver should check their periodic training record on https://www.gov.uk/check-yourdriver- cpc-periodic-training-hours to check their hours have been uploaded accordingly. If the hours have been uploaded, the driver could drive until their Driver Qualification Card arrives, but we would suggest they print the page from the GOV.UK training record and keep in their possession until the DQC arrives. If the card does not arrive within 20 days, DVSA asks that drivers get in touch with them.
