PD Ports to make Teesport a major UK hub for offshore wind
As the UK transitions to net zero, offshore wind will play a major role. The Teesport Offshore Gateway Project represents an ambitious move in this direction.
The project will develop a 180-acre site to accommodate the growing demands of the offshore wind sector.
PD Ports aims to establish a comprehensive facility supporting a wide range of activities, including manufacturing, assembly, marshalling, and supply chain services for the offshore wind industry. This positions Teesport as a key player in the expanding renewable energy sector.
A cornerstone of the Teesport Offshore Gateway is the construction of a new deep-water riverside quay, extending up to 1km. This crucial infrastructure will provide unrestricted North Sea access, catering to both floating and fixed-bottom offshore wind developments and accommodating the increasingly large vessels used in the sector.
PD Ports estimates the development cost to be in the region of £200 million (approximately €235 million), contingent on amendments to existing deep-water berth development consents.
Stephanie Haszczyn, Logistics UK's Senior Policy Manager working in decarbonisation said: "It's great to see this planning proposal from PD Ports which looks to unlock a huge amount of UK wind energy potential. Given the current and future demand for clean energy - including wind - in the UK and beyond, we urge the government to move forward efficiently and approve this kind of innovative and necessary project without delay.
"Unlocking these developments will enable green jobs and improve UK competitiveness, facilitating the logistics sector role in decarbonising the economy ""
