Better Infrastructure
Inadequate infrastructure comes at a cost to the UK economy, hampers the efficiency of logistics in all modes and contributes to pollution and poor air quality.
Logistics UK is campaigning for UK and Devolved Governments to fund improvements in the road and rail networks to enable efficient movements of goods nationally; for Local Government to invest in improving the quality of local roads and rail capacity; and for a planning system that enables and encourages the use of access points such as rail freight terminals, ports and wharves.
Key facts
-
Road congestion costs UK nearly £8billion per year - having an HGV stuck in congestion costs £1 per minute to the operator
-
Stop start traffic exponentially increases emissions in urban areas – an HGV stopping three times a mile and getting back up to 30mph can use three times as much fuel as one cruising at 30mph
-
The rail freight industry delivers £1.6 billion a year in benefits to the UK economy
