Skills shortages for HGV drivers are set to exacerbate due to the current age of drivers; currently half (50%) of are aged 50 or over, leaving gaps for when older drivers retire.

Post-Brexit recruitment restrictions and pandemic disruptions have also posed challenges for logistics firms, which Oakland International is looking to rectify with its new scheme.

Older drivers can impart their knowledge and experience on younger drivers, who struggle to get the necessary experience with current insurance restrictions, and help them gain more confidence.

“By partnering new drivers with mentors, we empower them to build real confidence and skills on live routes, helping them begin their careers sooner and thrive long-term,” said Lynne Pearson, General Manager, Oakland Distribution.

Bethany Windsor, Head of Skills and Generation Logistics at Logistics UK said: “It’s no secret that the logistics industry is confronted with serious skills shortages, which are in danger of inhibiting further growth if the situation does not improve.

“This scheme is a great example of how older drivers and younger drivers can help each other and learn from one another.

“Mentorship schemes can be a great way for logistics companies to facilitate knowledge exchange, and grant that much-needed experience for younger drivers coming in.

“Older drivers have plenty to give, with decades of experience in the industry, and younger drivers are keen to learn.”
