Scotland-France ferry link in the picture with £3 million commitment

The chances of a direct ferry route being implemented between Scotland and Dunkirk has become more likely following the UK government’s commitment of £3 million.

The announcement (19 March), which is subject to the conclusion of a commercial agreement between Forth Ports and a ferry operator, would strengthen trade links between Scotland and the rest of Europe, supporting trade and tourism.

The new route would operate from Rosyth to Dunkirk with both freight and passengers, linking Dunkirk’s rail terminal, which connects the port to major centres across the European Union.

The EU is a key market for Scottish businesses and accounts for nearly half (45%) of exports. This new link would drive economic growth in Scotland by strengthening logistical competitiveness, export capability and tourism opportunities.

Logistics UK’s Senior Policy Manager Alexandra Herdman said: “Strengthening Scotland’s connections with key European markets is vital for maintaining resilient supply chains, boosting export capability and enhancing the competitiveness of Scottish businesses.

“A regular freight and passenger service on this route would provide industry with much‑needed additional capacity and reliability, and we look forward to seeing progress as commercial discussions advance.”
