Logistics UK celebrates this month’s policy wins.

Welsh maritime and logistics plan, and ZE van and truck funding
New funding for road freight electrification

The government is investing £1 billion to support British businesses to roll out clean trucks and vans and install new EV chargers at depots; the announcement covers Zero Emission Truck and Van Grants (ZETVG) and the Depot Charging Scheme (DCS).

The truck grant will offer savings of up to £81,000 off the heaviest zero emission trucks, covering up to 40% of the cost. The van grant will continue to offer discounts of up to £5,000 off the cost of electric vans. Alongside this, businesses and public authorities will also be able to save up to £1 million, covering up to 70% of the cost when installing charging infrastructure for vans, coaches and eHGVs, with a £170 million investment into the government’s Depot Charging Scheme.

Logistics UK welcomed this package of support, as we have been calling for increased financial incentives the sector to help support enable the transition to zero emission vehicles. The Depot Charging Scheme will also play a crucial role in supporting fleet operators to install affordable, reliable charging infrastructure at their depots.

With industry committed to decarbonising, but many barriers still in place, Logistics UK will continue to call for support for depot charging, given the scale of the transition. Policy asks include needing transparency on available grid capacity to help inform investment decisions, the energy sector to produce clear guidance to help fleets navigate the grid connections process and also reform to planning to support the installation of depot charging.

Wales publishes Maritime and Logistics Plan

The Welsh Government published its Maritime and Logistics Plan, which recognises the critical role that the logistics sector plays in supporting trade and economic growth across Wales and the wider UK.

The plan identifies a set of priority challenges and opportunities for the sector, including the need to decarbonise freight, support modal shift, improve infrastructure resilience and land use planning, address workforce shortages and enhance the attractiveness of logistics careers, including through improved driver facilities. It also reflects lessons from recent supply chain disruptions, including problems caused by the pandemic and issues affecting Irish Sea routes.

Logistics UK has long been campaigning for a multimodal plan, which is underpinned by a focused and coordinated approach to develop Wales’s logistics and transport strategy. The business group has engaged with the Welsh Government through meeting with and writing to the Senedd, as well as meeting with shadow ministers, setting out why it is so critical for the Welsh sector in Wales, as well as those operating in Wales. Further work has also included being part of a coalition of seven trade associations representing Welsh food and drink from farm to fork, where the group has met with Parliamentarians about the value of logistics.
