DB Cargo trials tri-mode locomotive

A successful trial of a Class 93 tri-mode locomotive by DB Cargo on an intermodal service in the north west demonstrates how freight services can run more flexibly and sustainably.

Working in collaboration with Rail Operations Group and Network Rail, DB Cargo tested the 93006 to haul a Peel Ports service from Seaforth in Merseyside to Mossend in Glasgow and back on Tuesday 10 February.

It handled loads up to 1,500 tonnes and delivered a strong performance throughout, DB Cargo said.

The Class 93 is the latest and most advanced of Stadler’s UK locomotive family, a mixed-traffic locomotive manufactured in Valencia, Spain, building on the success of its Class 68 and 988 fleets.

It has three different power sources: running on electrified lines, diesel/hybrid and onboard battery power. The expectation is that these locomotives will reduce carbon emissions for rail freight and potential passenger services, supporting UK net zero targets.
