Colas Rail’s ‘Thunderbird’ locomotives are a go

Colas Rail has entered into an agreement with Network Rail for the use of its ‘Thunderbirds’.

Colas Rail’s UK freight division secured a three-year contract with Network Rail where its ‘Thunderbird’ rescue and recovery locomotives will be deployed in the eastern region, between London and Newcastle.

The locomotives will be deployed to rescue any broken-down passenger and freight trains on the East Coast Main Line.

The contract, which begins in January 2026, has the potential to be extended for a further three years.

Colas Rail’s service will be operated by two of its Class 67 locomotives and be based at Newark Northgate sidings.

Sep Semsarzadeh, Freight Operations Director at Colas Rail, said: “We are honoured and excited to work for Network Rail Eastern Region to provide dedicated 24/7 rescue and recovery services on the busy East Coast Main Line, and between London and Newcastle.

“Our Class 67s and pool of drivers will be on hand to deploy promptly from Newark Northgate Siding when and if required, to support various freight and train operating companies.”
