Calling for a pragmatic approach to decarbonisation

Logistics UK continues to call on government to adopt a pragmatic approach to decarbonisation, which reflects the needs of industry and allows the sector to reduce emissions in a commercially and operationally viable way.

Following the publication of a statement on low carbon fuels (LCF) sent to ministers with over 50 supporting organisations, and two reports on decarbonising road freight: Powering Change and The role of LCFs in decarbonising HGVs at the end of last year, and an initial roundtable on the importance of embracing all viable technologies and fuels to decarbonise, Logistics UK met with officials to further provide evidence on the transition.

Attendees at the roundtable included Logistics UK members as well as the Deputy Director of Decarbonisation Strategy at the Department for Transport, and colleagues from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, Climate Change Strategy team and Low Carbon Fuels team. Also in attendance were Zemo Partnership, The Renewable Transport Fuels Association, The Green Gas Taskforce, Sustainable Logistics Forum, an OEM and fuel suppliers.

Members and officials discussed decarbonisation objectives and government’s approach and talked about challenges around switching to battery electric fleets and specifically, concerns around what impact a ZEV mandate for HGVs could have. Logistics UK and members also stressed that with cost of living being a government priority, any regulatory decisions taken around a ZEV mandate must enable all viable ways to decarbonise, including LCFs.

Logistics UK will continue to engage with government on any future regulatory decisions made around the decarbonisation of the sector and emphasise the need for this to be commercially viable and not penalise operators.
