Birkenhead Eastfloat terminal receives £10 million redevelopment funding
The Eastfloat terminal at Birkenhead Port is set to receive a £10 million redevelopment, creating around 300,000 sq ft of indoor and 160,000 sq ft of outdoor storage capacity.
Peel Ports Logistics, the logistics arm of port owner Peel Ports Group, will continue to operate the terminal during the redevelopment, which is forecast to take place over the coming years, to ensure customers receive an end-to-end service.
Birkenhead Port is in close proximity to Port of Liverpool, only 7km away – which is also owned by Peel Ports Group – and serves markets across the UK and overseas.
The redevelopment will expand the port’s warehouse and cargo handling facilities, and will be able to handle a wide range of cargoes including bulk, steel, timber, containerised, heavy lift, project cargo and renewables and offshore equipment.
A dedicated container handling and devanning operation, with both indoor and outdoor storage, is already in place.
New plant machinery is also being invested in, including the installation of a new Liebherr 180 crane and other development opportunities such as two cement silos with a total capacity of 14,000mt are also being explored.
Seb Gardiner, Managing Director, Peel Ports Logistics said: “The Mersey region is firmly at the heart of UK trade, and restoring Eastfloat will allow us to keep meeting the demands of the most complex and challenging cargo movements.”
