£165 million boost to north east AirLink facility

Newcastle Airport’s proposed AirLink facility is anticipated to boost the north east economy by up to £165 million a year through the creation of a new cargo hub.

The facility, a 620,000 square feet development earmarked for land south of the runway, includes provision for a cargo hub which would build on the 4,000 tonnes of goods that are currently imported and exported through the airport each year.

It would serve as a base for cargo operators, freight forwarders and ground handling agents, the only facility of its kind in the region. It is an ideal location for businesses managing time-critical shipments including pharmaceuticals, automotive parts and other high-priority goods.

It is expected to create up to 1,000 direct jobs with a further 900 roles supported through supply chains and business partners.

Public consultation events are underway to update residents and businesses on the plans.

“The AirLink facility, if approved, will provide critical capacity for Newcastle Airport to boost cargo shipments and support job creation.”
