Logistics UK joins Welsh taskforce on Holyhead disruption
This week, Logistics UK was invited by the Welsh Government to join its taskforce to examine the disruption at Holyhead caused by storm damage to the port infrastructure, and identify ways to minimise similar issues in the future.
And as Josh Fenton, Policy Manager and policy lead for Wales explains, it is essential that lessons are learned to maintain the integrity of the supply chain routes between Wales and Ireland:
“The closure of Holyhead at the start of this year caused significant friction for the movement of goods between GB and the island of Ireland, at a time when the smooth movement of freight was essential. Our industry is flexible and adaptable, and at the time, identified alternative ways to deliver for customers on both sides of the Irish Sea, but the delays experienced then and subsequently have placed the supply chain under pressure that needs to be avoided moving forwards.
“Logistics UK is honoured to be invited to be part of the new task force, and on behalf of our members in GB and NI, looks forward to identifying ways to strengthen the port facilities at Holyhead and other key locations, as well as building resilience into the critical connections that serve businesses and consumers on both sides of the Irish Sea.”
Speaking about the formation of the group, the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, said: “Strong, reliable transport connections across the Irish Sea are vital for our economic prosperity. This group will proactively build on the successful collaboration we saw following the recent enforced ferry berth closures and help ensure our ports can adapt to changing conditions, continuing to support businesses and jobs in coastal communities and beyond.”

Advance warning: road closures
Upcoming closure of the A46 near Kenilworth
Highways England has notified Logistics UK that a section of the A46 near Kenilworth will be closed for an extended period in April. The road between the Stivichall Interchange to Thickhorn Island (A452 for Leamington and Kenilworth) will be closed from 11 April at 20:00 to 1 May at 06:00. A further three days are also to be held as a contingency in case of an unforeseen event. After the closure, there will be lane closures on the north and southbound carriageways with a speed restriction of 50mph until Thursday 31 July.
All motorists are urged to utilise the signposted diversion routes and not rely on satnav for directions. For those travelling to Coventry and the north, the diversion route follows M40, M42, M6E and then rejoins the A46. HGVs travelling to Kenilworth should leave at the Thickthorn Roundabout (A452). In addition to black and yellow signs to guide drivers, there will be multiple electronic signs across the network to assist with navigation. A3 closure in both directions 9pm 11 April to 6am 14 April
Highways England has confirmed it will be closing the A3 in both directions between the M25 junction 10 Wisley interchange and the Painshill roundabout at Cobham for a full weekend. This closure is needed to enable the safe installation of a new gantry on the A3, carry out major drainage work in the central reservation and install a technology trench crossing all lanes.
