PD Ports launches jumbo train service  

Teesport is a deep-water port strategically positioned on England’s north-east coast and handles global trade for large suppliers. It supports more than 22,000 jobs, contributes over £1.4 billion to the economy each year and facilitates the movement of nearly 26 million tonnes of cargo annually; in other words, its importance cannot be understated.   

Prior to the announcement, separate services ran to Mossend and Grangemouth, both in Scotland, but an observed ‘overflow’ of demands with wagons always full, led PD Ports to work collaboratively with Network Rail and DB Cargo to trial and approve the service.   

The result of that is a 16-wagon jumbo train, two wagons more than before, offering 40 additional slots per week. It will see trains run from Teesport to Mossend and Grangemouth every day.   

This ultimately means daily services with more flexibility, allowing businesses to drip feed volume without wholly relying on road transportation, cutting congestion, providing capacity where necessary, and timing services to align with ferry and container ship arrivals at Teesport.   

Mossend serves as a central hub for retail and distribution, while Grangemouth is a key site for the chemical and manufacturing industries.
