Hydrogen-powered railway enters the market

Vanguard Sustainable Transport Solutions and the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) officially launched to market the UK’s first hydrogen-powered railway shunting locomotive.

The event, which was held at the heritage railway’s Kidderminster Town Station, showcased the HydroShunter, which was developed from a disused Class 08 diesel shunting locomotive and is the brainchild of Vanguard, a company spun out from the University of Birmingham six years ago. Working in collaboration with the SVR, it is a retrofit solution designed to help decarbonise rail operations without requiring significant upfront capital investment in new rolling stock.

Guests invited to attend the event, including representatives from main line railway companies, heard more about the project’s overarching ambition to decarbonise railway locomotives and the potential it poses shunting operations nationwide.

Attendees were also invited to take a ride in SVR’s vintage observation saloon, which was hauled by HydroShunter along the heritage line.

The company is marking the HydroShunter to operators that are seeking a practical, cost-effective pathway to zero-emission shunting through the combination of proven rolling stock and clean propulsion technology.
