£4 million boost to NHS England for EV charging
NHS in England is receiving a £4 million boost as part of a push to roll out new electric vehicle charging sockets.
This is thanks to an extension of the DfT’s NHS Chargepoint Accelerator Scheme, announced on 27 February.
The extension builds on existing government funding, to support the delivery of over 1,000 EV charging sockets to power electric ambulances and fleets. Total investment in NHS charging infrastructure is £22 million, following the award of £10 million by the Department for Health and Social Care in January and £8 million by the DfT in 2025.
The aim is to reduce the costs of running these fleets and reinvest these savings back into frontline care. It will help the NHS modernise its 20,000 strong fleet of medical vehicles and decarbonise 460 million miles of travel each year.
Public charging figures provided by the DfT show there are now more EV chargers in place across the UK than fuel pumps; with 116,052 chargepoints available.
An additional £600 million has been announced on top of £400 million for local councils to deliver 100,000 chargepoints.
