M6 closure and M48 Severn Bridge weight restriction

Emergency repairs on the M6 motorway between Junction 36 and Junction 39.

This information is being shared in advance to support freight, logistics, coach and business operators in planning their movements and minimising disruption.

M6 Junction 36 to 39 northbound.

Overnight closures Thursday 19 and Friday 20 March 2026.

The work will involve resurfacing sections of the road where potholes and areas of deterioration have started to form, due to the harsh winter weather conditions and increased traffic volumes.

The potholes are expected to worsen, which means that they need to be repaired urgently to keep the network safe, and to minimise further disruption.

In order to keep National Highways’ workforce and road users safe, there will be a full closure of the M6 northbound between Junction 36 and Junction 39.

To minimise disruption, the repairs will be carried out overnight when traffic levels are lower.

Overnight closures:

The M6 northbound between Junction 36 and Junction 39 from 8pm on Thursday 19 March until 5am Saturday 21 March.

A clearly signed diversion route will take traffic off the M6 at Junction 36 then will follow the A590, A591 and A6 to M6 Junction 39.

M48 Severn Bridge weight restriction

M48 Severn Bridge heavy goods vehicles over 7.5t weight restriction – in force from 27 May 2025.

Due to the condition of main bridge cables, National Highways needs to reduce the load on the bridge to keep it open to most traffic. For the time being, this means removing the heaviest vehicles.

National Highways continues to monitor compliance with the 7.5t weight limit, and HGV volumes crossing the bridge remain consistently low.

This has been vital in keeping safety risks to a minimum.
