Electric Freightway drives a quarter of eHGV registrations

SMMT figures show that in 2025, the number of electric HGVs registered was 587, accounting for 1.4% of the overall market.

Of the 587 recorded, GRIDSERVE’s Electric Freightway programme is responsible for a quarter of that growth. A programme funded by DfT and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK, Electric Freightway has been designed to tackle two of the biggest barriers facing fleet operators: access to vehicles and access to reliable, high-power charging infrastructure.

In January it marked a milestone with the opening of the first dedicated and publicly accessible eHGV charging hubs at Extra Baldock Services on the A1(M) and Moto Exeter Services on the M5. Further locations are planned throughout 2026.

The market has been helped by an increase of vehicle choice, with 21 zero-emission truck models available, some of which are provided by consortium members; including DAF Trucks, Volvo Trucks, Renault Trucks and Daimler Trucks.
