Member alert: Make sure to conduct your TRIP checks

Around 53% of UK driving licence holders have broken down on a major road, either while driving or as a passenger, and of those 29% believe this could have been prevented if they had conducted vehicle safety checks before leaving.

As breakdowns rose from 70,287 in 2024 to 71,254 in 2025, National Highways has launched its spring TRIP campaign, aiming to reduce the number of breakdowns and keep the Strategic Road Network moving.

As part of the campaign, drivers are being encouraged to conduct TRIP checks before setting off on long journeys:

Top-up: fuel, oil, screen wash and charge your electric vehicle

Rest: plan your journey in advance with regular stops to prevent driver fatigue

Inspect: check lights and tyre conditions, pressure and tread

Prepare: have a plan for changeable weather conditions

Logistics UK’s Head of Road Freight and English Regions Policy Maddi Solloway-Price said: “We welcome the spring TRIP campaign launched by National Highways, highlighting the importance of carrying out comprehensive checks to support road safety.

“Professional HGV drivers must conduct daily walkaround inspections as part of their commitment to safety. However, this campaign serves as a valuable reminder to ensure every vehicle and every driver remains compliant and follows best practice to minimise the risk of breakdowns and disruption.”
