Wellness with Hannah (Key Account Manager)

“Wellness with…” is our ongoing series that takes a closer look at Logistics UK staff and the hobbies that support their wellbeing.
As part of our commitment to giving the logistics industry easy access to trusted mental health and wellbeing resources, we hope these stories encourage others to explore something new.
This week, Key Account Manager, Hannah, shares her experience with her hobby of Figure Skating.

What first inspired you to start figure skating?

I had always wanted to pursue figure skating from a young age, as I enjoyed being on the ice whenever I attended public skating sessions with my family. Unfortunately, the nearest rink offering lessons was too far for regular travel, which meant I was unable to take lessons at that time.

As an adult, I attended public skate and mentioned to a staff member how much I enjoyed ice skating. They informed me about the adult lessons available through Skate Excellence, which teaches the fundamental skills of skating. Following this, I began taking ice skating much more seriously and started working with a private coach to further develop my skills in figure skating.

Where do you usually go to figure skate?

I attend training at Planet Ice in Coventry.

Do you skate on your own, or with other people / as part of a group?

I ice skate on my own as a single skater. I attend patch sessions individually to focus on my personal training, and I also take part in group off ice sessions to build strength and technique. In addition, I have one joint on ice lesson each week with another ice skater on a public session.

How often do you go figure skating?

I ice skate several times a week. I attend individual patch sessions on Monday evenings, and on Saturdays I skate during the public session, where I also have my joint on ice lesson with another skater. On Tuesday evenings, I take part in off‑ice training focused on stretching, strength, and jump technique.

How long have you been figure skating? Have you noticed your performance improving as you practice more?

I have been figure skating for over two years, and during this time I’ve noticed my performance improving as I’ve practiced more. Regular patch sessions, public session practice, and off‑ice training focused on stretching, strength, and jump technique have all contributed to my progress. Having a coach has made a significant difference. I’ve seen development in my balance, edge control, spins, flexibility, and jump preparation, and I continue to feel more confident and capable on the ice each week.

Do you have any long‑term goals or targets related to figure skating?

My main aim is to continue building my skills and confidence on the ice, gradually progressing through more advanced elements such as more controlled and advanced spins. I’d like to keep improving my overall skating quality with the support of my coach. Most importantly, I want to keep developing.

In what ways does figure skating support your mental health?

Figure skating has become something I genuinely look forward to. It keeps me active, gives me a creative outlet, and offers a positive and enjoyable space where I can challenge myself while still having fun. Overall, it plays an important role in helping me manage my wellbeing.

Figure skating gives me dedicated time each week to focus which helps reduce stress and clear my mind. When I’m on the ice it creates a sense of calm and helps take my mind off everyday pressures.

I also find that the progress I make gives me a sense of achievement. This boosts my confidence and keeps me motivated.

Would you recommend that others take up figure skating, and if so, why? Do you have any tips for someone looking to start casual figure skating?

Figure skating is a fantastic way to stay active, build confidence, and learn a skill that is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. It’s also a great way to clear your mind, reduce stress, and focus on something positive and enjoyable.

Programmes like Skate Excellence are a great way to start, and purchasing your own properly fitted skates can really support your progress, as they offer far better stability and control than rented skates.
