Planning system call for evidence a positive opportunity for logistics, says Logistics UK

Tuesday 04 July 2023

Speaking on the announced government call for evidence on freight, logistics and the planning system, Jonathan Walker, Head of Cities and Infrastructure Policy at Logistics UK comments:

“The call for evidence on freight, logistics and the planning system is long awaited, much needed and should act as a catalyst for long-term planning reforms that recognise the importance of our industry. Logistics underpins every sector of the UK economy and it is vital that this is reflected in planning by acknowledging the need for logistics to support local communities, developing the necessary infrastructure to keep freight moving, incentivising investment in low/zero carbon operations and creating an environment that supports investment in logistics and warehousing sites.

“In publishing this call for evidence, government has taken a positive step forward in supporting the future development of our industry. We look forward to working members to submit comprehensive and compelling evidence to the consultation and hope to seek some positive planning reforms as a result.”

Logistics UK is one of the UK’s leading business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With decarbonisation, Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc. Logistics UK supports, shapes and stands up for safe and efficient logistics, and is the only business group which represents the whole industry, with members from the road, rail, sea and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers whose businesses depend on the efficient movement of goods.
