Middle East conflict and a call for member feedback via a new Logistics Performance Tracker survey

As reported previously, Logistics UK remains in regular dialogue with government on the situation and is monitoring fuel supply and the impact of rising costs, highlighting the impact on the sector and supply chains.

On fuel resilience, government continues to reassure industry the UK benefits from strong and diverse security of fuel supplies, confirming that fuel production, imports, and national supply remain stable, with no evidence of disruption. The government has also reassured that contingency planning in this area is well established. Government has a range of measures it can use in the unlikely event that normal supply chains become disrupted from any cause. Logistics UK has underlined the importance of timely and clear communication with the industry when required.

Given the cost pressures on the sector at this time, Logistics UK is urging the Chancellor to focus on bolstering business confidence and supply chain resilience, including by reviewing her decision to begin increasing fuel duty this year, to prevent further inflationary pressure at a time when the global economy is so disrupted. We are also urging the government to monitor narratives related to profiteering and to manage media and social media communications to help prevent fuel and other commodity shortages driven by panic buying.

To support our work in this area, we are collecting member feedback via a new Logistics Performance Tracker survey, where responses will be fed directly back to government officials.

Your feedback is vital and we would appreciate members completing this as soon as possible since we will be frequently monitoring results and using responses to feedback regularly to government and stakeholders about industry experiences.

Complete the short survey on SurveyMonkey here, or via Microsoft Forms here.

In the meantime, we have updated our regular update which is available to read here.

New Integrated National Transport Strategy

The government has published its new Integrated National Transport Strategy (INTS), Better Connected, intended to set out its approach to creating a more joinedup transport network across England.

The strategy focuses primarily on passenger transport, with measures to expand tapandgo payments across trains, trams and buses, improve travel information and give local leaders greater powers to integrate services.

There are limited references to freight and logistics. The strategy confirms that government is moving ahead with Great British Railways and states that a new national freight plan will be published later this year. It also states that investment in rail freight interchanges and network upgrades is intended to support growth in rail freight and reduce congestion. In addition, the document highlights the importance of lastmile delivery solutions, such as cargo bikes and local cargo hubs, particularly in urban areas.

Logistics UK welcomes the publication of the strategy, but says it is important that the role of logistics as an essential user of the network across all modes is reflected in transport policy. The forthcoming freight plan will be a key opportunity for the government to set out how the transport system can better support resilient supply chains and economic activity across the UK.

Join our member workshop on weights and dimensions policy asks

Logistics UK is launching its policy work into addressing the current weights and dimensions restrictions in the UK for HGVs. Working in collaboration with other trade associations for a unified industry voice, we need your business use cases and experiences to strengthen our policy asks. We are hosting an online member workshop on this topic on April 23 from 10:00-11.30 to shape our policy asks.

We would particularly like to hear from you and understand your experience on any of the following areas:

  • Where the heavier battery in an HGV powertrain has impacted your utilisation of electric vehicles.
  • Where your business model runs full loads and would be positively impacted by the introduction of longer or heavier vehicle regulations.
  • Where your organisation has compiled research into business operations and whether these could be improved by longer or heavier vehicles.
  • How addressing the weights and dimensions issues for electric HGVs would enable your business to operate more electric HGVs.

Please email Senior Policy Manager, Stephanie Haszczyn to get involved.

Logistics UK response to SAF RCM indicative heads of contract consultation

Logistics UK has responded to the government’s consultation on the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) revenue certainty mechanism (RCM), supporting the policy mechanism to help develop the industry and scale up domestic supplies.

In the response, it also outlines how there is a need for continued engagement between industry stakeholders and government to ensure the RCM supports progress and does not hinder the sector. It outlines the need for greater clarification around practical operations and raises concerns around how the buyout mechanism will function.
