Logistics UK convinces Greater London Authority (GLA) on need to amend London Lorry Control Scheme
The GLA published its London Logistics Plan update paper on Friday 27 March that will provide a framework to futureproof London’s long-term logistics needs, improve productivity and deliver good growth.
Contained within chapter 4 on Transport, the paper discusses the challenges and opportunities of efficient transport, by enabling retiming and reducing movements of commercial vehicles on the capital’s road network. Following recent lobbying activities by Logistics UK, the GLA has stated that one challenge to achieving the retiming of journeys are the barriers put in place to restrict off-peak and nighttime deliveries. To overcome this barrier, the GLA states that the opportunity would be to reduce the reduce the hours of control to allow more logistic movements to be retimed to the off-peak and overnight period. This is one of the key Logistics UK policy aims for London, so is a significant positive development. Work will continue with the GLA to supply it with the evidence it will need to take to London Councils to convince the organisation to amend the hours of control of the Scheme.
Work experience: a guide for logistics employers in England
Generation Logistics, in conjunction with Logistics UK member GXO, and the Department for Transport, has created a practical guide that explains how logistics employers should design and deliver work experience opportunities that support young people and strengthen future talent pipelines.
The guide is aimed at employers across the freight and logistics sector, including small, medium and large organisations, as well as those working with schools, colleges and careers partners It explains why work experience is critical to addressing long-term workforce challenges in the sector and sets out the benefits for both young people and employers, as well as clear, accessible advice on getting started, busting myths, and different work experience models. The guide also includes real-world case studies from logistics employers, practical steps to improve equity and access, and links to existing national support and careers frameworks.
Logistics UK will be responding the Northern Ireland Department for Infrastructure Speed Limit Review
The responses will help the department to understand the freight industry perspective in three main areas:
- 20mph speed limits.
- National speed limit on single carriageway rural roads, dual carriageway roads.
- Speed limits for HGVs.
The relevant documents associated with the public consultation can be obtained here. Please share your views with Head of Road Freight, Maddi Solloway-Price by the 14 April.
Middle East conflict and impact on fuel supply and cost
As reported previously, Logistics UK remains in regular dialogue with government on the situation and is monitoring fuel supply and the impact of rising costs, highlighting the impact on the sector and supply chains.
We are building our evidence base for discussions with government and stakeholders on the situation and its impact on logistics, please look out for and participate in our member survey, which will be launched after Easter.
On fuel resilience, government continues to reassure industry the UK benefits from strong and diverse security of fuel supplies, that it is monitoring stocks and sales closely and that production and imports are continuing across the UK as normal. The government has also reassured that contingency planning in this area is well established. Government has a range of measures it can use in the unlikely event that normal supply chains become disrupted from any cause. Logistics UK has underlined the importance of timely and clear communication with the industry when required.
Given the cost pressures on the sector at this time, Logistics UK is continuing to urge the government to review its decision to begin increasing fuel duty this year, to prevent further inflationary pressure at a time when the global economy is so disrupted.
