Logistics is the magic ingredient that delivers Easter

Silently, swiftly and with maximum efficiency, delivering exactly what, and when, it is needed, the Easter Bunny epitomises the perfect solution to a last mile delivery. And just like the Easter Bunny, the UK’s logistics workers have been planning for months to ensure all our Easter treats are in the right place at the right time. Industry research shows that UK consumers spend between £1–2.5 billion on Easter goods every year, and Logistics UK’s analysis shows the ingredients for traditional favourites such as hot cross buns and Simnel cakes will have travelled almost 55,000 km around the world, often over several weeks, and using the latest technology, to ensure they arrive in perfect condition.

Logistics UK’s Chief Executive Ben Fletcher said, “It is the traditional and familiar favourites that make celebrations so special – yet it is this familiarity that means we can often overlook the effort that it takes to ensure they are available on time.

“The ingredients for something as traditional as hot cross buns and Simnel cake come from all over the world and arrive in perfect condition, exactly when they are needed. It is a simple example that shows how logistics underpins international trade, facilitates our everyday way of life and how businesses and consumers alike depend on the logistics workers in the background who are as magic as the Easter Bunny and just appear to make it all happen.”

Everything that goes into making hot cross buns and the traditional marzipan-topped Simnel cake will have travelled almost 55,000 km before making it on to the Easter table – almonds from California, saffron and spices from the Middle and Far East as well as flour, butter and eggs from UK producers. All modes of transport are used to deliver Easter with container ships delivering dried fruits and nuts; high-value and lightweight items such as saffron imported primarily by air freight, and all items moving around the UK on the rail and road network – no bunnies involved!

The moveable Easter feast – how far do the ingredients of a Simnel Cake travel?

Ingredient Country of Origin Approximate Distance if Imported Logistics Lead Time
Marzipan Spain/ USA 1000 km – 12,000 km 2–3 weeks
Spices (Nutmeg, Cloves, Cinnamon) Indonesia / Sri Lanka / India 7,500 km – 10,000 km 6–10 weeks
Raisins, Currants, Sultanas Turkey / Greece / South Africa 2,800 km – 9,600 km 4–6 weeks
Citrus Peel (Oranges/Lemons) Spain / Italy / India 1,000 km – 7,500 km 2–4 weeks
Sugar UK / Brazil 500 km – 8,500 km 2–4 weeks
Saffron Span/ Middle East 1000 km – 5,000 km 1–2 weeks
Flour UK / EU 500 km – 1,000 km 1–2 weeks
Butter UK 500 km 1 week
Eggs UK 500 km 1 week

Operating largely undetected by the average household, logistics may appear to rely solely on magic, just like the Easter Bunny, but it is underpinned by leading- edge technology and processes that ensure the smooth flow of goods through the supply chain. Fletcher continues, “It is technology such as AI route optimisation, advanced data analytics, robotics and warehouse automation, smart charging and the Internet of Things that ensure we enjoy our traditional treats at Easter – and all the year round.”

High-tech solutions that make logistics as “magic” as the Easter Bunny

  • AI route optimisation – technology enables fleets to avoid congestion, cut emissions and improve delivery reliability using real‑time traffic, weather and network analysis.
  • Advanced data analytics and forecasting tools – mathematical modelling enables businesses to predict demand peaks, plan inventory and ensure goods reach consumers precisely when needed.
  • Robotics and warehouse automation – automated storage and retrieval systems increase warehouse efficiency and safety, and robots are used widely including for carrying out dangerous tasks like inspecting grain quality in silos.
  • Sensors providing real‑time visibility – the internet of things (IOT) monitors goods in transit – tracking temperature, location and vehicle status to protect product quality and reduce losses.
  • Smart charging and energy‑optimised depot infrastructure – computer software schedules, balances and monitors charging loads and helps supports the transition to zero‑emission vehicles.
  • Semi‑autonomous and driver‑assist technologies – technology enhances safety and efficiency on UK roads, supporting drivers and reducing collision risks.
