Logistics is intrinsic to Belfast pedestrianisation plans, says Logistics UK

Following confirmation that Northern Ireland Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins is to bring forward a consultation for the expansion of pedestrianisation areas in Belfast city centre, Logistics UK says any proposals need to recognise the needs of logistics operators and the businesses and events they support. The business group’s Northern Ireland Policy Lead Brenda Maguire said:

“Belfast was buzzing during the Fleadh, and it was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the city centre. It was also a timely reminder that cities depend not only on visitors but also on the businesses, services and supply chains that keep them running.

“While pedestrianising parts of the city centre may seem an attractive way to build on the Fleadh’s success, any proposals must balance the needs of visitors with those of the businesses and events they come to enjoy. Shops, restaurants, offices and entertainment venues all rely on regular deliveries and servicing, so the needs of the logistics sector must be considered at the outset of any plans to expand pedestrianised areas.

“Changes to road layouts and traffic management can have knock on effects for logistics operators and the businesses they serve. Reduced road capacity can lead to increased congestion and vehicle rerouting can lead to longer journey times, which in turn can reduce productivity and increase costs. It is also important that any new traffic management plans take account of access requirements at the kerbside for loading and unloading.

“The Fleadh attracted an incredible 1.6 million visits over eight days, but Belfast city centre draws around 60 million visits each year. These visitors expect the city centre attractions to be stocked, serviced and ready to enjoy. Any plans to pedestrianise the city centre must ensure businesses can operate with minimal disruption, and Logistics UK looks forward to engaging in the consultation process.”
