Urban Logistics

Our towns and cities depend on reliable and efficient logistics to deliver food, clothes, documents, medicines, building and construction materials. Our industry delivers a constant supply of goods and services for residents, workers and visitors, clears waste, supports jobs and keeps our urban areas going 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Urban Logistics

Urban areas are under increasing pressure to improve air quality and safety and to reduce congestion. In some cases, this is resulting in a patchwork of regulation which is difficult for businesses operating in multiple areas of the country to comply with.

The logistics industry recognises the challenges that cities and towns face and has already delivered significant progress in optimising supply chains, making better use of rail and water where appropriate and investing in cleaner and safer vehicles. Through cohesive policies, we can be part of the solution.

What is Logistics UK campaigning for?

Logistics UK has five priorities for Urban Logistics:

  • Ensure sufficient logistics land is available in the appropriate locations and protected for future use to enable the industry to efficiently serve our towns and cities

  • Avoid HGV regulations and restrictions that force logistics movements to unnecessarily replace a single vehicle with several smaller ones, resulting in increased traffic and emissions

  • Allow access to underutilised bus lanes for lorries, and review road layouts, signage and traffic signals to reduce congestion and emissions

  • Safeguard wharves and rail heads to enable and support modal shift where appropriate

  • Assist the industry in moving to electric and alternatively fuelled vehicles through the provision of refuelling and recharging infrastructure
