Highway Code is updated to reflect tougher sentencing guidelines

The Highway Code was updated to reflect a change in the law relating to two driving offences recently (27 July 2022).

The first offence affected is causing death by dangerous driving and the second is causing death by careless driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Both offences have had the maximum prison sentence increased from 14 years’ imprisonment to life imprisonment and the obligatory driving disqualification period has increased from a minimum of two years to a minimum of five years.

Plus, a new offence has been created for ‘causing serious injury by dangerous driving’. This carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, an obligatory driving disqualification and an unlimited fine.

Denise Beedell, Public Policy Manager, Logistics UK, said: “Safety is a top priority for Logistics UK members and this tightening in the law relating to dangerous and careless driving is to be welcomed, adding a further level of protection for the law-abiding majority of British motorists. Logistics UK will continue to campaign for policy and governmental reforms to make the operation of HGVs and vans even safer than today.”

As reported in Logistics Magazine in January, Logistics UK has been engaging closely with a review of the Highway Code since 2020.
