Leading logistics brands sign up to Logistics UK’s Route to Net Zero commitment
UPS, DHL UK, John Lewis Partnership, Wincanton, Scottish Water, and John Raymond Transport are just six of the companies to sign up to business group Logistics UK’s Route to Net Zero commitment, pledging to decarbonise their operations as quickly and as effectively as possible to help speed up the UK’s path to net zero by 2050.
LOGISTICS AT FOREFRONT OF DECARBONISATION AGENDA
“With climate change one of the most pressing challenges facing the global community, logistics businesses are helping drive the UK’s decarbonisation agenda; a slow transition to net zero for this key sector would not be effective for the planet,” said Michelle Gardner, Head of Public Policy at Logistics UK, “Logistics UK launched its Route to Net Zero commitment to help support the sector’s decarbonisation transition; all the members signed up to the commitment have proved they are willing to go the extra mile for the environment. But while the determination from industry may be there, the road to net zero is paved with uncertainty – currently there is no mass market zero emission HGV available, for example, and very limited alternative fuel or refuelling network. Logistics UK will continue engaging with government, manufacturers, and other stakeholders to seek clarity on the path to decarbonisation, and ensure the appropriate supporting infrastructure and financial support is in place.”
APPLYING FOR COMMITMENT A ‘NO-BRAINER’
A spokesperson for Wincanton, one of the UK’s leading logistics providers, said: “Wincanton has publicly committed to decarbonising its operations, so applying to Logistics UK’s Route to Net Zero Commitment was a ‘no brainer’ for us. As a leading supply chain partner for British businesses, Wincanton intends to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, a full ten years ahead of the legal deadline; our team is keen to share our decarbonisation expertise and good practice with Logistics UK members, through membership of the Route to Net Zero Commitment.”
A COMMITTED BUSINESS COMMUNITY
Current scheme members include Royal Borough of Greenwich, John Raymond Transport Ltd, UPS, Tai Tarian Ltd, DHL UK, John Lewis Partnership, Wincanton, Scottish Water, Howard Tenens Logistics Ltd, Marston Holdings, GKR Scaffolding Ltd, and GXO Logistics Ltd; the Agricultural Industries Confederation is an affiliate member.
MAKE THE COMMITMENT
To be accepted into the commitment, companies must first submit their environmental or CSR report and complete an application form; these documents are then assessed by members of Logistics UK’s policy and executive teams for suitability.
